LONG-LEGGED ELEPHANTS
The first project for the 2nd grade artists is inspired by the children's book Dali and the Path of Dreams written by author Anna Obiolis and illustrated by Joan Subirana. Dali and the Path of Dreams tells the story of well known Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali as a child. Little Salvi loves to run barefoot on the beach, rolling his hoop. One day as he plays along the shore, he spies a key gleaming in the water. Idly picking it up, he never dreams that the key opens the door to a strange and fantastical world where elephants have legs like giraffes, clocks melt like cheese left in the sun, and rowboats fly. Inspired by Salvador Dali's most famous motifs that are woven into the children's book, 2nd grade students are drawing long-legged elephants surrounded by the chilled air, falling leaves, and gigantic pumpkins of fall. Students discussed color families, contour lines, horizontal lines, vertical lines, intersecting lines, and the limitless possibilities of the Surrealist vision and creativity. |
